The 10 biggest scientific breakthroughs of 2022

//theweek

In 2022, scientists announced a series of major discoveries and achievements, including nuclear fusion, the James Webb telescope, transplant promise and a universal flu vaccine. The nuclear fusion breakthrough was announced by scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, who had produced the first fusion reaction that created more energy than was used to start it. This is a major breakthrough in harnessing the process that fuels the sun. The James Webb Space Telescope was named Innovation of the Year in aerospace technology. The telescope can see deep into fields of forming stars, and can peer 13 billion years back in time at ancient galaxies, still in their nursery. A group of Yale scientists reported in the journal Nature that they succeeded in reviving cells in the hearts, liver, kidneys, and brains of pigs that had been lying dead in a lab for an hour. This could help increase the supply of human organs available for transplant by letting doctors get viable organs from bodies long after death. U.S. public health officials also announced a universal flu vaccine in 2022 which could help to prevent severe damage to hearts after a devastating heart attack or brains after a major stroke.

Super-tough hydrogel could be the knee replacement material of the future

//zmescience

Researchers at Duke University have developed a synthetic cartilage material called Ormi-CFC that is much more durable than its biological equivalent. The team plans for it to serve as the base for advanced implants that could help relieve the pain and mobility constraints caused by damaged knee cartilage. The material could improve the lives of over 32 million adults suffering from conditions such as osteoarthritis in the US alone, by providing an alternative that is much more long-lasting and delay the need for knee replacement. The material is produced from thin sheets of cellulose fibers held together with polyvinyl alcohol, the cellulose gives the material resilience and the polyvinyl alcohol imparts body to the material to allow it to cushion movements and maintain the health of the bones at the site of the joint.

2022 was the year of the butt 🍑 (what can I say, I did a lot of squats), and 2023 will be the year of AI 🤖. Going into 2023, I have 13 predictions for you, ranging from alcohol to scientific breakthroughs.
5:58 PM ∙ Dec 30, 2022

Let me save you a click:

  1. The housing market in the Bay Area will drop by >30% in 2023 from all-time highs.

  2. 2023 will be the year of AI, and will move from early adopters to early majority. Most companies will attempt to add AI into their business. We will see rapid improvements in the AI infrastructure (e.g. OpenAI) in the 1st half of the year, but it will slow down in the 2nd half. We will continue to see people/companies building on top of this infrastructure.

  3. AI will significantly move into automating the following roles (in order of likelihood): customer support, content writers, and copywriting. We will begin to see certain tasks from lawyers and doctors be automated.

  4. Google will continue to dominate search, but its market share will drop from 92.2% (as of November 2022) to <80%.

  5. Crypto market cap ($844B as of December 2022), will trade sideways for most of 2023 and be <$750B by December 2023.

  6. USB-C will be the default port for all 2023 releases for top-tier electronic devices, including iPhones.

  7. There will be another breakthrough milestone in Nuclear Fusion (2022 milestone).

  8. A nuclear fission plant will be planned for new construction in the US.

  9. Tech layoffs in the Bay Area will continue and the Bay Area will continue to lose its tech dominance as roles are rehired in places with a lower cost of living.

  10. US Inflation will be <2% by end of the year, but interest rates will be >5% (4.25%-4.50% on December 2022).

  11. Wallets will become redundant in 10+ US states with the proliferation of digital IDs and smartphone payments.

  12. The number of paid subscriptions per US consumer will increase by 50% (from 12 to 18)

  13. The average number of alcohol drinks in the US will decline by 35% from 9.5 drinks/week to 6.2 drinks/week.

Change your words, change your life.

#IDEA

Tailored Sports

The idea behind "Tailored Sports" is to provide a custom sport supplement company that specializes in creating personalized pre-workout supplements. The company would take a quiz to determine the preferences of the customers such as caffeine intake, the intensity of "pump" or "itchy feeling", and flavoring preferences. Then, use the information to create a custom pre-workout supplement tailored to the individual's needs and preferences providing a truly personalized experience. This concept is unique and innovative, differentiating the company from competitors, who typically offer pre-made and standardized supplements, and providing a more effective approach for customers.
