Whenever I formulate new ideas in my head, I think that I have it all figured out, and then I start writing and find all of the holes. Writing helps slow the brain down and fill in the gaps.
There are three forms of idea conception, in order of frequency of thought are:

Each has a time and place, but use each to its strength.
